The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
