The United Kingdom and the United States have secured a significant commercial pact that will keep no import taxes on UK drug shipments going into the US market.

Key Provisions of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost expenditure on drugs through the public health system. This pledge guarantees that duties on these vital goods will stay at nothing for a duration of the next three years.

This development follows previous statements to dramatically increase duties on patented drug products, with increases floated up to 100%.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom reinforces the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and brings much-needed equity to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a release noted.

Economic Importance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the America, which is by far the largest buyer for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data reveal that in the 12 months leading up to last September, the UK exported medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount represented a significant portion of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee safeguards employment, boosts capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a worldwide center for medical research," a government official commented.

Detailed UK Commitments

The pact involves several key pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it judges new treatments to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase total public funding on medicines from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at 15%. Previously, rebates were more than twenty percent.

Industry Background

The pact takes place against a long-running dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by arguments that American customers were paying significantly more for the same drugs than patients in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while substantial funding commitments have been directed toward American operations.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS must spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its overall budget over the past decade.
